When a man is sexually stimulated either psychological or physical, the brain begins the process. The brain will send signals through the nervous system to the penis. The smooth muscles in the blood vessels of the body of the penis become relaxed and begin to release nitric oxide, which causes them to open or widen. This will allow increased blood flow into these vessels, increasing the size of the penile tissue. At the same time, the swelling penile tissues presses down on the veins of the penis, preventing blood from leaving to reenter the body. Men normally have 3 to 5 nocturnal erections. This is an important physiologic reaction that helps maintain the health of the penis.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to obtain and/or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It is important that you discuss ED with your physician.
Some common causes of ED include:
Aging
Vascular Disease
Diabetes
Prostate Cancer
Hypertension
Poor Circulation
Kidney Failure
Thyroid Deficiency
Multiple Sclerosis
Chronic Alcoholism
Spinal Injury
Depression
Some medications that may cause ED include:
Nicotine (excessive smoking)
Alcohol
Cocaine, Heroine, Amphetamines, and other illegal drugs
Tranquilizers and sleeping pills
Antidepressants
Blood Pressure Medications (beta-blockers)
Heart Medications (digoxin)
Some peptic ulcer medication (cimetidine)
Today, more than 30 million men suffer from some form of ED ranging from Mild, occasional ED to chronic, severe ED.
ED significantly impacts the quality of life for both men and their partner. It can lead to loss of self-esteem, depression, anxiety and severe relationship problems. The good news is that ED can be effectively managed and treated, provided that men have the right therapy and support.
In addition to ED, after prostate surgery one of the most embarrassing side effects of prostatectomy is the shrinkage of the penis, both in circumference and length. Penile shrinkage is common among men who have had prostate surgery and tends to worsen over time. However, VED® therapy has been shown to help patients maintain per-operative penis size. In a clinical study, 63% of patients who didn’t use a vacuum erection device after a prostatectomy suffered from penis shrinkage vs. shrinkage in only 23% of the patients who routinely used a vacuum erection device 1. Other clinical studies have reported early sexual function, penile length preservation and high satisfaction rates among men who routinely used a vacuum erection device after prostate surgery 2,3.
It is important to follow the directions in the manual unless otherwise specified by your physician. Men normally achieve 3 to 5 nocturnal erections. The purpose of the therapy is to mimic this normal physiologic process until normal function can be restored.
